Looking after silk

Cool water, a mild soap and patience: how to keep charmeuse soft for many seasons.

Silk is stronger than it looks and less forgiving than it should be. Most damage comes from heat, not from wear.

Washing

Dry cleaning is safest for a cut piece like the Solene slip. For a quick refresh, hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral soap, swish rather than rub, and never wring.

Drying and pressing

Roll the piece in a towel to lift the water, then dry it flat and out of the sun. Steam from the inside, or press on the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the silk.

Storing

On a padded hanger, in a cotton bag, with room to breathe.
